Even though I don’t have many readers……..

I decided that I could at least participate, even though it might not help that much.  When I was checking blogs this afternoon I read Carole’s blog and saw that this guy is aking for all bloggers to help him with some research.  See, he is is presenting a paper at MLA.  The following is from his site.

What is the speed of meme?  People write in general (typically truimphant) terms about how swiftly a single voice can travel from one side of the internet to the other and back again, but how often does that actually happen?

He goes on to ask that you help him by posting about his post and request and then to ping at another site. The following is what he posted on what he wants bloggers to do.

  1. Write a post linking to this one in which you explain the experiment.  (All blogs count, be they TypePad, Blogger, MySpace, Facebook, &c.)
  2. Ask your readers to do the same.  Beg them.  Relate sob stories about poor graduate students in desperate circumstances.  Imply I’m one of them.  (Do whatever you have to.  If that fails, try whatever it takes.)
  3. Ping Technorati.

There is no knitting content in this post due to having done no knitting.  I may or may not update later, it depends on if I do any knitting between now and later.

Not much tonight

I managed to double the measurement of my sister’s scarf - from 6 inches to 12 inches.  Also, the scarf for my friend’s daughter increased by about an inch to a total of 13 inches.  Then I measured my friends scarf and it is at 8 inches.  Once I knew how big they were I had to figure out what to shoot for size-wise.  I am going with 40 inches for the kid, 50 inches for my friend (she is only 5′ tall), and 60 inches for my sister (she is 6′ tall).  I chose these lengths because I want them to be usable, but still manageable.

Also, the Sunset Seraphim grew by another row.  There it has stalled because I just don’t feel like moving the lifeline due to it having been a very long day.  I have yet to retake the photos due to how long today has been.  Just to give you an idea, I got up at 3:30 am to make sure I made it out the door at 5:30 am.  Then I worked on putting out freight, down-stocking (requires constant up and down on ladders), was run ragged by customers for 2 hours and then to put the topper on the day my mom and I ran errands from 11:30 am until 5 pm.  Then we came home and made dinner and worked on getting the Christmas decorations up.  To help matters along we are both feeling like we are getting either the flu or a cold.  We are hoping not to get sick, but if so we hope it is just a cold as those are easier to work through.

Well I have to be back at work at 6 am again tomorrow so I am going to get off of here so that I can do dishes and get ready for bed.

Just a quick note

Well, unfortunately I somehow deleted my photos from the camera when I tried to upload them.  So this means I will have to try retaking them.  Since I work tomorrow and we (my mom & I) have to run Christmas related errands after work I am not sure if I will get them taken and uploaded tomorrow, but I will try.

In other news, my sister’s scarf (the Cha-Cha in Hippie and the Frosting in white) has been started and I managed to get close to 6 inches done already.  I managed this by placing my scarf onto another set of needles that are smaller, but still large enough to keep the stitches from falling off.  This means that I will be able to finish all 3 gift scarves without having to wait until I finish mine.

I also managed to get about 5 rows done on the Sunset Seraphim, including putting in my first lifeline.  This came after having to perform the second surgery on this shawl after noticing a couple of extra yarn overs.  I have decided that I will just keep moving the lifeline up about every 5 rows (so I need to move it already) until I get to the charts.  When I get to the first chart I will put a lifeline in on the row before it in case I mess up with the chart.  Through out the charts I think that I will put in a lifeline about every 2 or 4 rows just to be on the safe side.  The one thing I am glad of is that since I knew I wanted to make the shawl bigger I got 3 hanks of yarn for a total of 1320 yards (the pattern calls for between 800 - 900 yards, so even adding extra stockinette rows should not cause me to run out of yarn.

Well, I have to be to work at 6 am and since that means leaving the house at 5:30 I had better get some sleep.

It’s been a looong weekend

WARNING: Job related rant below.  Knitting content at the end of the post.

I know that I mentioned that I was surprised about how our customers acted on Friday (better than normal) so I should have known something was up.

On Saturday I had to close which is something I haven’t had to do for several weeks due to the store manager being very happy with how well I stock (ie: I actually place the items in the right place and put all overstock up were it belongs properly).  So already I knew that it would be a long night.  Then upon getting to work I found that the store was a mess, the customers were back to their normal selves and that I was closing with one of my least favorite front end supervisors (FES).  Yay!  Well, the night went as I expected, except it got worse about an hour before closing.  I had my area recovered, my returns put mostly away, and had even done most of the clean up of the front end due to the FES disappearing for several hours (normal) - during which time I was the only register open.

Just to give you a picture of our store so you can understand why this is bad.  As you enter our store you come in using automated doors (they only open from the side meant to be used ie: the exit only opens from  inside the store) and to your right are the registers.  They start at register 1 closest to the exit door and end with register 7, which is obviously the farthest from the door.  Were was I?  On register 6, which made it very hard to make sure that nobody was leaving the store without paying.  Then to add to it the phone at register 6 does not work - no paging or answering the phone which is a cashiers responsibility.

So, what made my night wonderful was the behavior of  a customer’s daughter.  I had rung up the customer’s  purchase and she had slid her credit card already when the phone started to ring.  Our rule is that the phone should never ring more than twice.  So since the customer’s receipt had printed and all I needed was her signature I asked her to sign the receipt and leave it on the counter while I answered the phone (which at this point had rung 4 times).  The customer said okay so I answered the phone while she signed and then she started to leave the slip on the counter.  Well, her daughter (who had already given me attitude about several things that night and was probably in her 20’s, so old enough to know how to behave) decided that even though no one was around the register that leaving the paper (which has all but the last 4 digits of the card number x’d out) that this was not a good enough response and walked up to me and shoved the slip into my pants pocket.  Not the pocket to my uniform (we have something that has pockets that we have to wear), but my jeans pocket on the back of my pants.  And, THEN while I am talking to the customer on the phone she starts to rant about how I should have not answered the phone and that it was MY responsibility to get the phone fixed at register 6.  Now unfortunately since we only use register 6 &  7 during holidays it is not a big priority to get the phone fixed - though the manager ordered a new phone from corporate back at the beginning of October.  What made my day with this customer though was several things 1) she was not the one paying 2) her mother had no problem with what I suggested 3) she had already given me attitude and 4)how she made sure the customer on the phone could hear her.  Tell me how does someone in their 20’s not know this is not proper behavior?

Compared to Saturday Sunday was not so bad.  The worst part was how busy we were.  It was pretty much non-stop customers for 5 hours and it was very unorganized.

Well, enough about my job, lets move on to more interesting subjects.  Since my last progress report I have only managed another row or two on the Seraphim in Sunset and nothing at all on anything else.  This is in part due to how tired I have been from the constant go at work.

Then there is the temptation to start new projects.  I have the pattern for a pair of socks, some cheap acrylic fingering weight yarn, and some brand new cheap dpns to try and understand how to knit socks.  I have fallen in love with some of the wonderful colorways of sock yarn out there, but until I know if I can knit socks I refuse to spend the money on sock yarn.

Then there is the fact that if I kept with it I could easily whip out the stockinette portion fairly quickly I think.  Since I have never used charts before that could be a problem.  So, I decided the solution was to use my expected stitch count (I changed the size by deciding to add at least 12 rows per Miriam’s pattern due to the one made in Sunset being meant for my sister who is 6 feet tall), the charts, and my handy pen and paper to work the pattern up into a written format.  When I get to the charts I will use them, but this way I get experience deciphering the charts as well as create a written version to refer to if I get confused.  So far I have managed to (hopefully) correctly decipher the first chart through like the 20th row or so.  Since I have Monday off hopefully I can get all the charts done and some knitting done as well.

As to photos - I believe we have located the cable I need.  If not my mom has said she will upload the photos to her computer and then share the files onto our network.  Yes - we have a network.  It is the only way since we have  2 desktops (mine & my dads), 2 laptops (my moms & my dads) and then my dad also brings home his work laptop and all of them must use the same DSL modem.  This does not include the 2 laptops that will arrive in December when my sister and her husband visit over the holidays.  Then there is my fond hope of getting a laptop for school next year.  While I wait for that, at least I have been upgraded from a bulky regular monitor that took up my whole desktop to a nice, new, shiny flat-screen monitor (a very belated birthday gift from my parents as my birthday was in September).

Even though I could I guess I should finish this up so that I can go to bed.  Even though I have Monday off I have to be to work at 6am on Tuesday and since I am not a morning person the only way I will manage that is by keeping my schedule fairly normal.

More tomorrow.

Well I survived

Just as I thought - it was a horror.  Not that the customers were rude or anything.  I was actually surprised by the fact that most of our customers were nicer and better behaved than normal.  One of my biggest pet peeves about working in retail is how lazy some people can be about either returning merchandise to where they found it or simply giving it to the cashier when they check out if they change their minds.  Sometimes I just want to say “Listen up people - if you change your minds about something we would much rather have it brought to the front where we know we have to put it back, than to have you throw it on the floor, a shelf, whatever.  It doesn’t take that much more effort to leave it in your cart until you check out.”  Too bad that would most likely get me fired.

Well, I didn’t manage to get anything done on my Seraphim today.  I thought that since I left for work an hour early and it is only about a 15 minute drive that I would have plenty of time to work on it - both before work and during my break.  Turned out that due to traffic it took almost the full hour to get to work and then during my break I was so mentally drained that I could not even handle the basic stockinette of the first part of Seraphim.  Maybe I will get some done tonight.

I know that I mentioned getting photos on here, but even though I could have borrowed her camera my computer does not have a memory card reader.  She does have a cord that will allow me to upload the photos using the USB ports, but it is still packed in one of the boxes we have of storage from the move.  Since she doesn’t need it she was not worried about finding it.  Hopefully I can find it over the weekend and get some photos uploaded by Monday, but no promises.
